Ministries
Ten major Union ministries: what each was allocated, what that was revised to partway through the year, and how the money splits between revenue and capital.
- Covers
Read from the Demands for Grants summary published with each Budget. These are gross figures, stated before receipts and recoveries are netted off.
That matters more than it sounds, and it is why this table is not ranked by size. How much a ministry nets off varies enormously: for 2023–24 the Railways demand is ₹8.85 lakh crore gross against ₹2.81 lakh crore of net budgetary support, because it is stated before railway revenue receipts, while Defence is ₹8.36 lakh crore gross against ₹7.85 lakh crore net. Sorted by the gross figure Railways would lead the table — true of the document, and false of the world. Comparing a ministry with itself across years is sound; comparing two ministries with each other is not.

Final ministry-level Actuals are deliberately absent. They require Appropriation Accounts and grant-level reconciliation across a ministry structure that changes between years, which is outside the V1 source set — see the methodology. Union-level final Actuals are on Budget versus Actual.
